The Analytical Engine, designed in the 1830s, was the successor to Babbage's Difference Engine. It incorporated an Arithmetic Logic Unit, control flow in the form of conditional branching and loops, and integrated memory, making it the first design for a general-purpose computer. Ada Lovelace's work on the machine included the first algorithm intended to be processed by a machine, making her the first computer programmer.
