The Roman Republic

Summary

The Roman Republic was the period of ancient Roman civilization beginning with the overthrow of the Roman Kingdom, traditionally dated to 509 BC, and ending in 27 BC with the establishment of the Roman Empire. It was governed by a complex constitution centered on the principles of a separation of powers and checks and balances, with power vested in elected officials (Consuls) and a Senate. This era saw Rome expand from a city-state to a global power.

"The Republic is nothing, merely a name without a body or a shape."

— Julius Caesar
