Biography

King of the Franks and Lombards, and the first Holy Roman Emperor. He united much of western and central Europe during the Early Middle Ages. He was the first recognized emperor to rule from western Europe since the fall of the Western Roman Empire three centuries earlier.

Legacy

His rule spurred the Carolingian Renaissance, a period of cultural and intellectual revival. By uniting a large part of Europe and fostering a common identity, he is often considered the "Father of Europe."
