Carolingian Renaissance

Summary

The Carolingian Renaissance was the first of three medieval renaissances, a period of cultural activity in the Carolingian Empire. It occurred from the late eighth century to the ninth century, taking inspiration from the Christian Roman Empire of the fourth century. During this period, there was an increase of literature, writing, the arts, architecture, jurisprudence, liturgical reforms, and scriptural studies. It was a conscious effort by Charlemagne to revive the culture and learning of the past.

"Right action is better than knowledge; but in order to do what is right, we must know what is right."

— Charlemagne
